Why 75 Years Matters
Financial products and services have changed dramatically over the last seven decades. What has not changed is the need for unbiased guidance when debt feels overwhelming.
Founded in 1951, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, a nonprofit, was created to help consumers understand credit and make informed financial decisions. From budgeting and debt management to housing and financial education, our work has always been grounded in independence, transparency, and consumer advocacy.
No commissions. No sales pressure. No hidden agendas.
A History of Consumer-Focused Financial Guidance
As credit, regulations, and economic realities evolved, nonprofit counseling evolved with them—designed to support people through change.
1950s–1960s
Credit becomes part of everyday life. Nonprofit counseling emerges to help households understand borrowing and budgeting.
1970s
Consumer protection laws strengthen transparency and fairness. Counseling expands into education and consumer rights.
1980s–1990s
Credit cards go mainstream. Structured debt management and standardized counseling practices take shape.
2000s
Rising household debt increases demand for trusted, nonprofit financial guidance.
2008–2012
The U.S. housing market collapses, triggering a foreclosure crisis and the broader Great Recession. Credit counseling expands into foreclosure prevention, hardship counseling, and financial stability support.
2010s–2020s
Digital access expands. Counseling shifts from crisis response to long-term financial wellness.
