Online New Member Application

To be eligible for membership, you must currently:
  • Be a tax exempt organization under section 501(C)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Be duly qualified and existing under the laws of the District of Columbia, or any states or territory of the United States of America.
  • Provide financial counseling services and act in compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations—contact your state government for requirements.
  • Be accredited by the Council on Accreditation or demonstrate that you have submitted application and initial payment.
  • Comply with the NFCC’s Member Quality Standards .

We maintain links to the creditor community.
  • We keep the lines of communication open with aggressive and articulate advocacy for the credit counseling sector.
  • We also provide members with research and studies on topics of interest to agencies and creditors.
We raise public awareness.
  • Our consumer Web site, NFCC.org, hosts millions of visitors and gives them a direct link to your agency.
  • Our national media advisories and Member Agencies newsletters inform creditors and reporters about the activities, programs, and services of our member agencies.
  • Our National Locator Line gives consumers 24-hour access to participating Member Agencies.
  • NFCC is featured in numerous media interviews each year.
We seek out opportunities
  • We search for grant and contract funding to help support your community education and housing counseling efforts.
  • We work closely with the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development to match NFCC programs to HUD goals, thus maximizing your chances of earning HUD grants.
  • We keep you informed about changes and opportunities in the housing and credit counseling industries.
  • Our collaborations with various governmental divisions and advocacy organizations increase the likelihood of network and coalition partnerships for our members.
We educate people on the national level.
  • We help you with programs that both educate consumers and promote financial literacy.
  • We strive proactively to increase financial awareness. We initiated the concept of a President's Council on Financial Fitness and helped organize the Jump$tart Coalition, dedicated to improving the “financial smarts” of all our children.
  • Our websites contain useful tips and tools to help consumers realistically assess their financial situations and find professional help if necessary.
We create a forum.
  • We recognize your need to connect with other agencies, to discuss issues and challenges you face, and to celebrate the hard work you accomplish on behalf of troubled consumers across the country.

  • We hold an Annual Leaders Conference every fall that includes an awards program, plenary sessions and workshops on a range of credit counseling topics.
