Job Description: Consumer Credit Counseling Service has been ranked as one of the Best Places to Work in the Bay Area 2008 by the San Francisco Business Times. We are a non-profit organization designed to educate and help consumers with a variety of financial fitness programs. Our goal is to assist individuals and families in achieving their financial goals, getting out of debt and buying their first home or saving their home from foreclosure. We are looking for an individual with a strong desire to help others and provide exceptional service to our customers. We have multiple positions available for Credit Counselors and Housing Education Counselors. Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Vietnamese skills are a plus but not required.

Summary:

Credit and Housing Education Counselors work with individuals on a personal money management level by performing budgets, analyzing income and itemized expenses before outlining a realistic strategy of establishing savings, getting out of debt, or foreclosure prevention.

Counselors work with individuals and families on personal and family financial problems such as excessive spending and borrowing of funds.

Counselors also provide information to clients including, but not limited to bankruptcy, collection action, court judgments, credit education, credit reports, housing issues, consumer protection laws, student loans, wage attachments, etc.

Credit Counselors specialize in helping individuals get out of debt by either utilizing our Debt Management Program, communicating directly with their creditors or establishing a plan on their own with the help of the counselor. Credit Counselors may also work with people in establishing a savings plan and provide individuals with educational materials on personal finance.

Housing Education Counselors specialize in Early Delinquency Intervention and work with individuals in establishing a plan to keep their home and avoid foreclosure by working with their client on a budget level, providing materials to the client on how they may communicate with their lender or contacting the lender directly in an effort help the lender and mortgager find a resolution and establish and alternative repayment plan.

Additional responsibilities:

Produces a written action plan that supports the counselor's conclusion as to the course of action that promotes the client's best interests or the client's choice of action.

Performs elements of on-going casework as needed to provide service and problem-solving assistance for client inquiries and account management.

Answers incoming calls from consumers; discusses agency services and schedules appointment for appropriate services as necessary. Provides information and referrals to consumers to internal resources, community resources and other organizations.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training (EAP, financial services, counseling, banking, credit and collection); or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have knowledge of Spreadsheet software, Word Processing software, and Internet research software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must successfully pass NFCC Counselor Certification exams within 6 months from date of hire. Must successfully pass Counselor Issues exam within 3 months from date of hire. CRR and CIC Certification within 12 months from date of hire.

Other Requirements:

Ability to work flexible hours as necessary. Two evenings and two Saturdays per month may be required.
